Bristol Beacon Transformation
Responsive wayfinding for a cultural icon

A ‘once-in-a-generation transformation’ of the iconic Bristol Beacon multi-venue complex.

We developed a sensitive and architecturally responsive design concept to inform a wide range of wayfinding solutions. The concept acknowledges and balances various user and operational needs.

  • A major component of the brief and design intention of the project was to bring the new Bristol Beacon visual identity to life through the provision of placemaking and wayfinding solutions.

Initial consultation with stakeholders revealed a ‘mode of operation’ model. We identified varying patterns of building operations and people-flow based on different event and user types. Our analysis informed our message planning and dynamic requirements of each sign type, location and response to the event context and the time of day or week.

As well as developing the concept through to detailed design planning and signage installation, we produced a naming strategy, procurement strategy and implementation plan for both the main complex, and an education centre.

Over 600 signs have been produced, ranging in scale, material, and complexity.
