Our Public Realm and Movement Strategy for Bath recommends a radical and inspirational plan for the transformation of its urban environment. Ambitious, aspirational, pragmatic and flexible, the plan provides a foundation for incremental change over 20 years.

The overall objective is to stimulate the rediscovery of a quality public realm and to amplify public life within the city centre. It proposes that Bath might become the UK’s most walkable city — healthier, more vibrant, and inclusive.

Bath City Design Program
A vision and strategy for the city’s renaissance

  • We engaged with stakeholders in design panels and public consultations: the public realm panel included 20 national and international designers from the fields of urban design, landscape design, lighting, theatre, and opera set design; the mobility panel included experts in transportation and mobility.

A framework of projects were proposed to benefit local people, as well as visitors, stimulating further economic investment and business growth, and enhancing Bath’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and international visitor destination.

For the City Information System, we were positioned as client design advisors, and provided oversight of the overall systems architecture with David Quay, FW Design, and Pearson Lloyd helping to realise the system’s expression in typographic, graphic, and product form. The system was firmly rooted in an understanding and appreciation of Bath’s history and evolution to deliver a distinctive, modern solution that respected the city’s unique character — bringing richness, detail and sensory delight to the public realm of the city.
